Aspiring Flight Attendant

Image
Her name is Abby, a lovely and smart girl travelling with her grandparents from Knoxville back home to Daytona Beach. It is always nice to meet girls whose dream is to become a flight attendant.  Her grandparents requested this photo with us of Abby because she loves to be a flight attendant. It was not my childhood dream to become a flight attendant, but it was my college dream.  I had no regrets with my long time career with the U.S. government.  I was glad that I chased my dream after all these years. Sometimes, our interests change overtime. We outgrow them or sometimes we just set them aside, until the right timing comes. It is never too late to pursue your dream. Whether it was a childhood dream or something that we recently build our interest into doing - go for it. Like Abby, we all have our childhood dreams.  Make them a reality!

Who Needs a Mentor?

Image
I think we all do.  When the company offered the Special Assignment Flight Attendant Inspire Mentor position, I knew that it is one of the things I would love to do. I expressed my interest and they selected me to be one of the mentors. I am grateful and honored. Our role is to successfully guide, support and counsel new flight attendants following completion of their initial operating experience, as well as other seasoned flight attendants who would want to benefit from mentorship. Our role is focused on the growth of flight attendants. To have a personal or professional mentor is always a good thing. John Maxwell says, "The most valuable thing you have to give is yourself. Find someone to pour your life into." When I started this job, I didn't want to involve with other positions that I was encouraged to do.  I told myself that I just want to be a regular flight attendant and be the best in what I do. But decisions change. ...

Inspiring Graffiti

Image
Rochester inspires! In October, I had a long layover with another favorite FA, Isis and we both decided to enjoy the day. Our goal was to eat breakfast and go to the weekend market. It was a beautiful morning to walk. I was inspired to see these graffiti on the street. "You Can. Imagine. Inspire. Believe. Be the Change."     "What is Your Purpose? "   There were some posters on the walls with great thoughts and great advice. Rochester is a role model for graffiti. You guys rock! After couple of miles walking, we finally found the market. We had breakfast and did some bargain shopping. I love bargains and I love markets.  I found a musical globe and bought it.  On our way back to the hotel, we passed by a church and spent few minutes inside. Then we had early dinner at our favorite Dinosaur BBQ before heading to work that night. T...

Stuck in Detroit

Image
I always say that every day is different in the aviation world. It is OK to anticipate what will happen for the day and to say that good things will happen for the day, but it is hard to plan your day until you made it to your destination. To be flexible is a key requirement to have on this job. It is a universal advice to  always bring your luggage with your personal stuff all the time, even if you only have a day trip. Don't assume that you will never get stuck somewhere. A passenger asked me one day why Flight Attendants carry luggage all the time. And that was my answer. When I was new back in January 2015, I made a wrong decision of not bringing my personal stuff for a day trip.  I assumed that we would go back to NY that night.  I was wrong! We couldn't fly back to NY and were stuck in Detroit because of the weather. I worked with my friend, Lea on that trip, and John was deadheading with us. It was of course, a ...

Ferry Flight

Image
A ferry flight is a non-revenue flight with the purpose of returning an aircraft to the base, positioning an empty aircraft or moving an aircraft to and from a maintenance base. It is also known as a repo flight or repositioning an aircraft to leave its current location to pick up passengers. Since I have started, I've had more or less 4 of this flight. This was one of the ferry flights when I was new. It was a flight from Toronto back to the US with Tenisha in February 2015. I don't mind having a ferry flight once in a while.  The door is closed and we are paid.  When there's no passengers on board, it means I can relax and read my book. We don't get this ferry flight often, but when I do, I just enjoy the ride!

"Every Day Sunshine"

Image
Montreal airport My family and friends know me as a person who loves sunset. I just finished a 4 day trip on CRJ 200, with trips back and fort Montreal - JFK - Cleveland.  After having done 200 trips lately, I am proud to say that I enjoy doing it now. On November 14, I started my day from Montreal bright and early.   The fact that our hotel is at the airport, I was still rushing that morning. The TSA line was a little slow because in front of me was couple of wheelchair passengers.  I was a little stressed, and decided to be proactive to call crew scheduling and let them know that I am running a little late.  I like the gate agents in Canada. They are nice and don't give us a hard when we don't show up exactly on time. I started boarding, with no more stress.  One wheelchair passenger boarded first and I helped her settled on her seat.  Then the second one boarded, and greeted me back saying t...

Welcome to America!

Image
A flight close to my heart. My first job after college was with the International Catholic Migration Commission / Joint Voluntary Agency. I did it for 4 years back in 1989. ICMC's mission is to "protect and serve uprooted people, including refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced people, victims of human trafficking, and migrants - regardless of faith, race, ethnicity or nationality." As part of the processing team, we processed the documentation of asylum seekers including refugees to enter the US.  Most of the refugees we processed were from Vietnam. It was an encouraging and fulfilling job, knowing that we were part of their dream to begin a new life in other countries, particularly the USA, after running away from their country due to economic & political issues. Most of them don't even know how to speak in English language, but they are legal migrants funded by the US government. They have their dreams too, to live in a free land. B...

Sweet Treats

Image
I call it a great flight when passengers are having fun and appreciate us. Back in July, a group of 30+ passengers were on board our flight from JFK to Chicago.  They are from Wisconsin and they just came back from Iceland.  They told me they had a great time in Iceland. One of the couples gave us this chocolate from Iceland as a token of appreciation. They know that our jobs are stressful and they were thanking us for a safe flight.  They even have a printed label of the thank you note. That was impressive! Thanks for the sweet treats. And as we say in our announcement, "We are honored to be part of your journey." This flight was one of the most fun flights I have had so far.  We don't always get this kind of passengers, but when we do, I make the most of it.  When I have nice passengers, I also thank them for being nice.  They make our job easier and more enjoyable. I always say that being a Flight Attenda...

Initial Trip

Image
When you are a new Flight Attendant, you are on "reserve" and wait for the call of a crew scheduler to give you a trip. In July 2014, after a couple of days being on reserve and stand by at the airport, I was finally given a 3 day trip with Faye.  It was exciting but at the same time nerve racking. I told myself - this is it.  This is the real world of being a Flight Attendant. I can't remember any specific scenario we had on the flight.  But what I remember was that I was struggling with alcohol drinks. Because I rarely drink and don't know much about liquors, beers and wines, I was having difficulty identifying and remembering them.  I was lucky to be paired with Faye.  She was a little senior to me.  She's very nice, encouraging and fun to be with. We were helping each other all throughout the flight. I haven't flown with Faye again, since then. But we became friends. Our layover was in Arlington,...

Fun in New Orleans

Image
New Orleans is one of the world's most fascinating cities. It is a home to a unique melting pot of culture, food and music. Tourists flock to New Orleans to attend the Mardi Gras season during February.  To attend the festival is on my bucket list. I will do it someday. I remember, New Orleans was my first good layover when I was new. I went to explore the city by myself. It was exciting! I had a trip with one of my favorite girls, Bethany back in May. We had a great day exploring the French Quarter and Bourbon Street, and shopping at the weekend Flea Market.  I bought a Mardi Gras scarf.  We enjoyed a good crab cake lunch, and beignet and gelato for desserts. A good layover in New Orleans is a favorite of many Flight Attendants. I am not a big drinker, but I can drink one or two. I had the rum coke that night and I liked it. To have fun in New Orleans is to experience what they have.
